Ooty Itinerary: How to Spend 1, 2, or 3 Days in Ooty

September 29, 2026

Ooty attractions are spread in different directions. Without a clear plan, you may spend much of your trip stuck in traffic.

We visited Ooty as a family when I was a kid with my parents, and later with my hubby and kid, and it became one of our favorite stops on an all-time vacation. Over the years, we have taken the toy train, gone boating on Ooty and Pykara Lakes, walked through the gardens, and driven the Pykara route several times.

This Ooty itinerary is based on that experience, what worked well, what we would adjust, and how to balance hiking, scenic stops, and downtime so the trip feels exciting rather than rushed.

If you’re still deciding what to prioritize, start with our guide to the Best Places to Visit in Ooty (link), which covers all of Ooty’s top sights. For broader planning advice, including where to stay, transportation, and seasonal travel tips, see our complete Ooty Travel Guide.

How Many Days Do You Need in Ooty?

Two full days are enough for a first trip to Ooty, but three days offer a more relaxed experience.

With two days, spend one day around central Ooty and keep the second day for the Pykara route. If you have a third day, add Coonoor, take the toy train, or simply slow down and enjoy your hotel.

Keep in mind that two nights at a hotel may not give you two complete sightseeing days. Most hotels allow check-in around 2 pm and ask guests to check out by 11 am or noon.

If you reach Ooty early, ask the hotel to store your luggage. You can start exploring central Ooty and return later when your room is ready. We usually prefer doing this instead of waiting at the hotel for check-in.

We don’t usually end the trip as soon as we check out either. After checking out, we spend a few more hours around central Ooty or take the Kotagiri route on our way back if it suits our return journey.

This way, even a two-night stay can give us useful time on both the arrival and departure days. Just keep the final plan light and leave enough time for traffic on the hill roads.

Ooty Itinerary Map

1 Day Ooty Itinerary

With only one day in Ooty, don’t miss the central attractions. Ooty’s center has the most popular, most epic scenery. The driving route is marked on our map above.

Start early to maximize your time. That means starting by 7:00 am, if possible.

Doddabetta Peak

Driving time from Central Ooty: 7.5 km, 20 minutes

The first stop of the day is Doddabetta Peak. Try to reach it by 7 or 8 am. If you get here early enough in the morning, you’ll feel relaxed. After 11 am, especially on weekends or during peak season, the crowds and traffic can be frustrating. We have seen the road get so busy that cars move inch by inch.

I visited Doddabetta about six years ago, but I’m not a big fan of it. The winding drive up made me feel motion sick. If you enjoy hilltop views and don’t get motion sick, you may like it and If you prefer a slow morning or are not interested in peak viewpoints, you can skip Doddabetta. Have a relaxed breakfast and begin your day at the Botanical Garden instead.

Government Botanical Garden

Driving time from Central Ooty: 1.9 km, 6 minutes

We visit either this garden or the Rose Garden on almost every Ooty trip, so it has become one of our little family traditions. You can explore lawns, colorful flower beds, and different old trees.

The garden will be very busy on weekends. Wear comfortable shoes for walking. Don’t rush through the garden if you are carrying toddlers.

Government Rose Garden

Driving time from Central Ooty: 1.6 km, 6 minutes

If you love flowers, you can also visit Rose Garden next. When the flowers are in bloom, the colors make it a lovely place for a slow walk and photographs. We visited the garden while staying at ITC, which was just opposite, so it was an easy stop.

The downhill walk feels easy, but climbing back up can be tiring, especially with young children or older adults.

Ooty Lake

Driving time from Central Ooty: 2.8 km, 6 minutes

Ooty Lake is a popular family attraction. You can choose a pedal boat, rowboat, speedboat, or family boat. We used to take a pedal boat here every time, and on my recent September visit, I saw they’d added bungee jumping and paid activities for kids and adults.

During peak season and weekends, the queue may be longer. You can skip boating if you don’t have time.

Town Walk

Take a short walk in Charing Cross or the Central Ooty town area. If you are interested in tea, bakery snacks, chocolates, or shopping, explore the shops. If you love chocolate, stop at Moddy’s and try their hot chocolate. I really enjoyed it, and a warm chocolate drink tastes even better in Ooty’s chilly weather.

2 Day Ooty Itinerary

Day 1: Central Ooty Highlights

Follow our Central Ooty highlights on the Day 1 itinerary above, but skip any option that doesn’t fit your plan.

Day 2: Pykara Circuit

Driving time from Central Ooty: 25 km, 50 minutes

This is another popular spot. Getting here early, preferably earlier than 9:30 am, will help minimize the crowds.

This was our favorite experience in Ooty. The views are incredible, and we love to go here again and again.

We started from Ooty, stopped at Pine Forest first, and enjoyed the Pine tree views. From there, continue to 6th Mile and 9th Mile, followed by Pykara Falls. Save Pykara Lake for last; enjoy the boat ride, then drive back to Ooty.

All these places are on the same side, so the route is easy to follow. You don’t have to spend the same amount of time everywhere. If one place is too crowded, move on to the next. We did this at Pine Forest and ended up spending a much better time at 6th Mile.

Just don’t start too late, as you need to reach Pykara Lake before the boating counter closes.

You can read more details about our Pykara experience at each stop, walking difficulty, tips, and see a lot more photos in our guide to Pykara Scenic Drive Guide↓(link)

Alternative Day 2: Coonoor

If you are not interested in Pykara, spend a day in Coonoor.

You can enjoy the toy train or road journey, Sim’s Park, a tea plantation, Lamb’s Rock, and Dolphin’s Nose.

3 Day Ooty Itinerary

With three days, you can explore all three main spots: Coonoor, Pykara, and Central Ooty.

Day 1: Coonoor and Toy Train

Take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam to Ooty. Depending on your interests, choose one of these two options.

Option 1: Mettupalayam to Coonoor by toy train

Get down at Coonoor and visit two or three nearby places:

  • Sim’s Park

Tea plantation

  • Tea Factory
  • Lamb’s Rock
  • Dolphin’s Nose

We recommend a tea plantation, Sim’s Park, and one viewpoint for a balanced combination in Coonoor. Don’t try to fit all the attractions in at once.

After sightseeing, travel from Coonoor to Ooty by road. Once you reach Ooty, check in to your hotel, have a proper meal, and rest. If you still have time and energy, visit Ooty Lake or take a short walk around town.

Option 2: Mettupalayam to Ooty by toy train

If you want the full train experience, continue directly to Ooty without adding Coonoor sightseeing. After reaching Ooty, keep the rest of the day light.

The full toy train journey is scenic but slow, and the seats may not be very comfortable for everyone, especially if you have kids or elders with you. Book your tickets in advance.

Day 2: Pykara Circuit

Follow the Day 2 itinerary listed above.

Day 3: Central Ooty and Departure

Follow our Central Ooty highlights from the Day 1 itinerary above, but in a shorter version;skip any option that doesn’t fit your plan. Follow the plan from my one-day itinerary.

Start from the Botanical Garden and choose one:

  • Rose Garden
  • Tea Factory
  • Ooty Lake
  • Doddabetta Peak

Instead of adding last-minute attractions to your checklist, start early. Traffic on the hill road may be unexpected.

Want a Different Experience?

If you are not interested in visiting Coonoor or Pykara, choose any one of these alternatives:

  • Avalanche: Forest and lake scenery (Driving time from Central Ooty: 26 km, 1hr 15 minutes)
  • Mudumalai: Wildlife-focused full-day trip (Driving time from Central Ooty: 55 km, 1hr 50 minutes)
  • Kotagiri: Tea estates and quieter hill views (Driving time from Central Ooty: 27 km, 1hr minutes)

Choose only one because these places are in different directions. Transport, entry rules, and permits may vary, so confirm the latest details before starting your trip.

Where to Stay for This Ooty Itinerary

On our Ooty trips, we mostly stayed in or near the main town. This made it easier for us to find food, visit nearby attractions, and return to the hotel whenever our son needed rest.

For this itinerary, I recommend choosing a hotel in or near central Ooty. For our personal experiences at A2B, Gem Park, and ITC, read our complete Ooty Travel guide.

When to Visit Ooty for This Itinerary

You can follow this itinerary year-round; October to February typically brings fewer visitors and slightly cooler temperatures. Christmas, New Year, and long weekends can still be very crowded, so choose a weekday if possible.

Summer (March to June) offers the best weather but also the biggest crowds and parking challenges, especially in central Ooty and at the main attractions. June to September makes it a great balance of scenery, though it might be raining.

We also visited in August and September and experienced cool weather and mostly cloudy/rainy days. On our recent September visit, the rain made the hills greener, and Pykara Falls had a good water flow. Rain in Ooty doesn’t always last all day. Sometimes it comes and goes quickly, but it can still affect boating, viewpoints, and driving time.

No matter when you visit, build flexibility into your schedule. Clear days are best for sightseeing, while rainy weather suits enjoying the climate from the room, and we love to do that too.
